Hair thinning and hair loss are conditions that can affect both men and women, though male pattern baldness, which has a genetic predisposition, remains the most common cause of hair thinning and loss. This typically manifests at the crown of the head and often with a receding hair line. Topical treatments and shampoos, oral medications, hair pieces and surgical hair transplants have traditionally been the most commonly used remedies, often used without achieving the desired results.
What is it?
PRP therapy offers a non-surgical treatment option using your own blood which is spun down to PRP and injected into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles to promote new hair growth. PRP is naturally rich in growth factors that when injected into areas of the scalp that are thinning or completely without hair, has the ability to stimulate the hair follicles to enter back into an active growth state.
Is it painful?
Prior to the procedure, your scalp will be anesthetized utilizing a small needle and a long-acting anesthetic medication to perform a nerve block. This will numb the entire area of the scalp that will be treated. After this initial injection and your blood draw, the remainder of the procedure should be painless. In the days after the procedure, you may experience some mild soreness and itching as the PRP absorbs and starts taking effect.
What are the side effects?
The risks of adverse bleeding events, infection and allergic reaction are extremely rare, especially because the procedure involves injecting your own body back into you. Other than slight discomfort in the days following your procedure, there are no anticipated side effects.
How many treatments will I need?
Results are typically most noticeable with a series of 4-6 treatments performed in 2-week intervals. At your initial consultation, a treatment plan will be formulated specific to your needs.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
You can call to schedule a consultation with one of our clinicians and be sure to read the contraindications, pre- and post-procedure instructions before planning on scheduling your PRP hair loss treatment.
