Treatments Offered at The Neurogenerative Institute at South Florida Injury
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that uses high dose oxygen coupled with increased atmospheric pressure to enhance oxygen delivery to all the body’s tissues. The increased amount of available oxygen results in improved cellular function throughout the entire body. The increased delivery of oxygen to the brain specifically, has shown to improve the many symptoms that people with TBI suffer from. Additionally, HBOT is commonly used to boost immunity, in wound healing, to treat altitude sickness and diving-related illness such as the bends, to aid in sports recovery and to aid other regenerative therapies such as PRP and stem cell treatments.
At the Neuroregenerative Institute at South Florida Injury, we use HBOT to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic headaches. These sessions last 1-2 hours and are done 2-3 times a week for up to 40-80 weeks. Patients are assessed frequently to personalize treatment plans based on symptomatic relief (improving attention, memory and concentration, improving emotions negatively affected by the trauma, improving light/sound sensitivities, improving sleep, improving severity and frequency of headaches).
NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme found in every cell of the body that is involved in many of the cells’ processes. NAD+ supplementation has been shown to slow the aging process, restore neurological function, improve mental clarity and improve overall health.
At the Neuroregenerative Institute at South Florida Injury, we start with weekly intravenous (IV) infusions that take anywhere from 1-4 hours based on how well the patient tolerates the NAD+. Treatments are then personalized based on the patient’s symptomatic relief of their specific TBI symptoms.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a very important element of regenerative medicine. The PRP is derived from blood drawn from the patient and undergoes a proprietary process to isolate the platelets and the many growth factors that they contain. There are several specific growth factors found in PRP that are indicated in helping those that suffer from TBI/concussions through aiding in the formation of new blood vessels (vasculogenesis and angiogenesis), primarily.
At The Neuroregenerative Institute at SFI, these growth factors are delivered to the brain through the olfactory nerve and cribriform plate which is accessed via intranasal atomization of the patient’s PRP. This is a painless procedure that takes 10 minutes and is recommended anywhere from 1-3 times depending on the patient’s symptomology. Many patients who suffer a TBI develop difficulties with their gait and balance, coordination, cognition/memory and can even have issues related to their autonomic nervous system such as variability in their heart rate.
At the Neuroregenerative Institute at SFI, patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation by a physical therapist specializing in the field including:
- Assessment of gait, balance, oculomotor, and vestibular function.
- Musculoskeletal assessment related to any head, neck, gait, and / or balance dysfunction.
- Cognitive evaluation establishing baseline measurements of the different aspects of cognition, including memory.
- Heart rate variability assessment to guide ANS training and regulation.
- Brain wave assessment to guide Neurofeedback training and reorganization.
Treatments are then tailored to each individual patient and may include manual therapy, vestibular and oculomotor therapy, sensory integration and balance training, cognitive rehabilitation, brain wave biofeedback therapy, heart rate variability training and vagal nerve stimulation. Patients typically treat 2 – 3 times per week anywhere from 45-60 minutes per session and are reassessed often to determine progress and allow for modifications of the treatment plan.
